About this deal

things happen fast here, and again—i knoooow it's middle grade (and canada!), but i've grown out of the part of me that was able to gloss over the unrealistic, which here is not so much the monster plants and...other developments, but the crisis response and management—it is too efficient! this tiny island handles the unprecedented like champs and things are more okay than they ought to be, considering. When they finally kiss, I'm like, "NOoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Don't kiss him, Hector!!!!!!!" And that's bad. That's not how you should feel when reading a romance. You should think the two people falling in love are cute, good people, and deserve each other. Ari. just. nearly everything about him. he was immature and self-absorbed and, quite frankly, awful. Ari went through absolutely no character development whatsoever and was horrible to all those around him. worse yet, he was treated like a misunderstood kid who didn’t know the consequences of his actions and was never held accountable for the hurt he caused.

This planning is ideal for Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6 children and links to the book which is a well written and enjoyable story that will engage the class well. What frustrated me is that Ari, the character who is working in his dad's bakery, is a selfish, self-absorbed, whiny, immature, pouting little brat. And I'm supposed to think Hector falls in love with him!!!!

It's also a movie on Netflix now, I believe, starring Naomi Watts. I haven't seen it (yet), but do plan on doing so. Maybe this is a me case. Maybe I’m too old for this type of book, and would have loved it a few years ago. But I personally think this one falls on Kenneth Oppel. He can do better- HAS done better.

Meet the author and illustrator

I loved how the illustrations started with just small strands of plants and then BOOM, burst into full bloom. It really looked like the book came to life, and I was delighted that they added this. Reread recently for a project, and I just can't get over how well Oppel is able to escalate the tension in this story and develop the characters. I am finding this story to have a wide appeal amongst readers, and I would not be surprised to see the popularity of this story grow dramatically as more adults and kids find it. Highly recommend!!!

Ari not knowing what he wanted to do in life. I think that this uncertainty is almost universal in teens and I appreciated its portrayal. that being said, this was the only thing I liked about Ari’s character. Well, I won't tell you- get this book and enjoy these glorious progressions yourself. And ponder on the photos when you need some inspiration and aspiration toward goals that seem too painful or impossible to accommodate another hour. No, another minute. Despair, pain, being trapped to a place where you have "lost" any remnant of yourself forever- that kind of future when you need to see any possibility ahead that could be tolerated by your spirit! It's the true story of Sam Bloom, as told by her husband, Cameron Bloom. They led a happy and active life traveling the world. She worked as a nurse and he as a photographer. One day, while on vacation with their three boys in Thailand, she leaned on a rotted safety fence and plummeted. The result was a long stint in the hospital and a paralysis from the chest down. Along with a loss of taste and smell which is permanent. Bloom explicitly takes place in Canada, with the primary settings being Salt Spring Island and Vancouver. I used to get annoyed at familiar settings as a kid. I wanted to experience far off, distant, unfamiliar places in my fiction. But now I find it kind of fun to read about a location I know. There’s even a Scotiabank reference. 😛I read this book because I saw its screen adaptation on an OTT platform first. I loved the movie 'Penguin' and wanted to learn firsthand about the book it was based on. And that is how it came about to be. De flaptekst en de cover spraken mijn erg aan, dus ik heb het boek snel aangevraagd als recensie-exemplaar. Ik mocht het boek lezen en wat ben ik blij dat ik het gelezen heb! Cameron and Sam, a couple from Australia, shared a mutual love for adventure and travelling and all that is sporty and spontaneous. After having three kids, they decided to take a long overdue vacation to Thailand. This one vacation changed the course of their lives forever. Sam suffered a fall which she survived miraculously but became paralyzed from chest-down. The life, as they knew it, was gone forever. The Woekerkoppen or gardenheads. I wouldn't mind a garden on my head though. I wonder what kind of plants or garden would grow on my head. Since each person gets their own that fits their personality which had me delighted and laughing. How perfect that it matched people so wonderfully, even though some may want to deny their rotten nature. :P
