About this deal

Virtual cycling platform Rouvy is rolling out a significant update today, featuring a revamped UI/UX dashboard and enhancements to the core riding experience In our article about Ultegra versus 105, we were swayed toward 105 because of its cost savings over Ultegra. When compared to Tiagra, we’ll again be swayed towards 105. There are a few reasons for this. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed Tiagra is a really impressive groupset. It does everything you want from a mid-level road bike with only a few minor quibbles. The biggest decision is whether you're really fussed about having the 11-speed of Shimano's more expensive 105.

The use of Shadow technology helps to reduce the chance of damage to your rear derailleur, it’ll help to keep your shifting stabilized, and it also makes the rear derailleur look a little more compact. You’ll also find that it is capable of reaching 30t cogs on your cassette in its short cage version. is also available in a direct mount option (you need to have a compatible frame and fork) where the brake arms bolt straight on to the frame/fork rather than via a central bolt. There is no Tiagra direct mount option. Disc brakes It will also be a little while longer before 11 speed becomes obsolete. With all the top tier Shimano groups being 11-speed you’ll find it easy to upgrade to them and this should help to make it easier to find parts in the future. From what I can tell the shifting, hydraulic lines and everything should be the same but not sure if there is a difference in cylinder capacities or anything that would stop the brifters working with the calipers. tiagra is different to all the other Shimano road 10 speed. It does indeed use the same pull ‘ratio’ as 11 speed, but the actual amount of cable it pulls is different to both traditional Shimano 10 speed road and Shimano 11 speed road. We have talked about this before, so we’ll be brief with this answer. A groupset is a group of parts that are all made to the same quality. If you look just above the final box under where the headline says "Verdict" you'll find 2 links to the cheapest prices we could find on the web. So in answer to your question. Yes we can, and we do already. It might even have saved you 20 seconds of your time if you'd seen it! Tiagra brakes have also seen a good amount of improvement and an increase in stopping power. However, they aren't of the same quality as 105.

Shimano 105 Versus Tiagra - Is It Too Close To Call? Shimano 105 Versus Tiagra - Is It Too Close To Call?

It probably sounds like an attractive option right now, but I have to say, as somebody who has a 105 groupset, I won't be upgrading my components to Ultegra or Dura-Ace. I don't feel the need - the 105 groupset is fantastic and relatively budget-friendly. On the other hand, Tiagra is available in a triple chainset configuration: 50-39-30. You’ll need a triple-compatible left hand shifter and front derailleur as well. The lightness needed in shifting is similar (if not the same) to that of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace setup. Both the Shimano 105 and Tiagra chainsets carry on Shimano’s love of aluminum cranks arms and a super-strong steel spindle. Given how light Shimano can make these, there are no real reasons to expect them to stop soon. Manufacturers like Shimano will produce various types of components at different levels. This gives cyclists options when it comes to buying a road bike gear or a bike.Shimano says: "For the first time in its history TIAGRA supports internal cable routing, which gives the road bike a much more clean and professional look. Along with internal cable routing TIAGRA has also adopted the iconic four-arm crank design which is available in the popular gear combination for entry level riders of 52-36T and 50-34T. With the standard pitch cycle (bolt circle) diameter of 110mm both chain ring combinations are interchangeable because they fit on the same crank set. There is quite a bit of difference between the Tiagra and 105 groupsets when you look at the threaded options, certainly in percentages. In actual weight, we're only looking at 15 grams so it won't add much to your road bike. A number of technologies have filtered down to 105 R7000 from the more expensive Ultegra and Dura-Ace groups and Tiagra components are a little heavier. As ever, you pay more for lighter weight. The hoods are comfortable to perch on and the levers to use, and there’s a solid feel to the shifting and braking.

Shimano Tiagra groupset review | Cycling Weekly

As somebody who has upgraded through the Shimano groupsets, I understand the differences that a better rear derailleur or chainset can make to your overall riding experience. One of my bikes currently runs a full 105 groupset (spoiler: I think it's great). As commenters have pointed out, the 105 chainset is significantly lighter than the Tiagra, but is reported to work fine in an otherwise Tiagra set up, so if you have a Tiagra bike, a 105 is a worthwhile upgrade. Front derailleur It's a groupset that can give you what you want from a mid-tier road bike. Sure, there are a few niggles but they are tiny and can be overlooked.

Was helping a mate upgrade his gearing on his Tiagra equipped bike. Pointed him to the cassette and longer cage mech he needed. I installed the parts for him and for the life of me I couldn’t get the indexing dialled in. I’ve done a bit of digging and it seems in its latest iteration Shimano have changed the pull ratio to be the same as that of the 11 speed components. So new shifter is needed. Due to the fact that Shimano uses a 160mm rotor, you won't need to apply lots of pressure to the brakes. Both groupsets offer many great features, so you can see why the Shimano Tiagra vs 105 is a hotly debated topic.
