The starry sky is the truest friend in life, when you've first become acquainted; it is ever there, it gives ever peace, ever reminds you that your restlessness, your doubt, your pains are passing trivialities.”This was an interesting book with an intriguing concept, but I was expecting more than I received, and I've finished it slightly disappointed. I thought this book may contain information that I was unaware of, but it was the same ideas, constantly repeated at various stages throughout the book. They lie there in silence, looking no different, more or less, to the way they were the last time I saw them, 22 years ago. Humans are social creatures. Being accessible can be a good thing. We are unable to function alone. Yet it’s important to be able to turn off your phone, sit down, not say anything, shut your eyes, breathe deeply a couple of times and attempt to think about something other than what you are normally thinking about.

Asked at Hay this year how his children feel about his ideas on achieving silence, Kagge replied that his daughter "thinks it's total bullshit". Kagge also tries to use Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" to boost his case (weird, as music, including that song, is somewhat of a sound-based phenomenon), and says things like, "I have more faith in Steve Jobs as a responsible father than as a visionary marketing genius" because apparently Jobs "limited his own children's access to Apple products." Lol okay. So Kagge has really done his research on Jobs, then. Which paths lead to silence? Certainly trips into the wild. Leave your electronics at home, take off in one direction until there’s nothing around you. Be alone for three days. Don’t talk to anyone. Gradually you will rediscover other sides of yourself.”Much like his Walking: One Step at a Time, there is a great deal of insight to be found here. One of the things that Kagge focuses on, to my endless fascination, is our discomfort with silence. A discomfort of silence that we're all familiar when we're at the dinner table with friends or wrapped up in other social obligations but a discomfort that is quite contrary to the popular employment of phrases like "silence is golden" and associating quiet with peace. It is easy to assume that the essence of technology is technology itself, but that is wrong. The essence is you and me. It’s about how we are altered by the technology we employ, what we hope to learn, our relationship with nature, those we love, the time we spend, the energy that is consumed and how much freedome we relinquish to technology. Not long after, I was invited to give a lecture at St Andrews University in Scotland. I was to choose the subject myself. I tended to talk about extreme journeys to the ends of the Earth, but this time my thoughts turned homewards, to that Sunday supper with my family. So I settled on the topic of silence. For me, silence is not merely about the complete absence of sound; it is also about the ability to find wonder in the everyday. Wonder is one of the purest forms of joy that I can imagine. I enjoy the feeling. I often wonder. I do it almost everywhere: when travelling, alone or with my three daughters, when meeting people, or whenever I feel my heart beat, hear something for the first time or see the sunrise.
