About this deal

Watching Manchester United in 1998/99 was an exhilarating rollercoaster ride from start to finish and still the very best single season that any English club in over 150 years of organised football has ever experienced. Man Utd came to the fore and five successive wins put them in the ascendancy in February. In one of those successes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four goals in 14 minutes after coming on as a substitute as they thrashed Nottingham Forest 8-1 at the City Ground, the biggest away win in Premier League history. With City boss Pep Guardiola hoping to emulate United manager Sir Alex Ferguson 24 years on, BBC Sport looks at five matches that helped United earn English football's first Treble triumph. Arsenal 1-2 Man Utd (FA Cup semi-final replay) Winning the Treble is also considered the greatest achievement in the career of manager Alex Ferguson, although he has disagreed with that assessment. [87] In recognition of the team's success, Ferguson was made a Knight Bachelor and also received the Freedom of his home city of Glasgow. [88] [89]

As in the previous four seasons United rested many of their first-team players in the League Cup, instead using the competition to provide first team experience to their younger players and reserves. In the third round of the competition United required extra-time to defeat Bury, eventually winning 2–0 with goals from Erik Nevland and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. [56] In the fourth round, two more goals from Solskjær gave United a 2–1 victory over Nottingham Forest, earning them a place in the quarter-finals for the first time since they reached the final in 1994. [57] United were beaten in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur; two goals from Chris Armstrong and one from David Ginola gave Spurs a 3–1 victory, with ex-Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham scoring the consolation for United on his return to White Hart Lane. In the last full season before the turn of the Millennium, history was made as Manchester United became the first English club to win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League treble, and their fate in all three competitions was sealed during an incredible 10-day period in May 1999. Two minutes later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer poked home a second to give manager Ferguson his first Champions League trophy - in 'Fergie time'.
