About this deal

Beneath the Avata are two downward-looking sensors for accurately calculating the distance from the ground using binocular vision to build a ToF (time of flight) map of the ground beneath the drone. The 5.1 GHz frequency band is currently banned in China and Thailand. For details, please refer to local laws and regulations. The design of the Avata is a radical departure from the original DJI FPV, as this design has no folding elements, placing its blades inside protective rings. While we haven't been able to test it to destruction, the Avata looks like it was designed to handle a few obstruction encounters without rapid and unexpected disassembly. The DJI Avata Pro-View Combo includes the DJI Goggles 2, DJI’s flagship FPV goggles offering, whilst the DJI Avata Explorer Combo pairs the Avata drone with the new DJI Goggles Integra.

This not only allows for greater sensitivity in lower light conditions but also provides greater dynamic range when grading the footage in post-production. For the record, the DJI Motion Controller supports more intuitive and easy-to-use controls for the DJI Avata, supporting one-handed operation and using hand movements to control the drone. Meanwhile, the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 is required for users who want to use M (Manual) Mode for precise, complete and limitless control. One slightly surprising feature if the DJI Avata is that it's substantially slower than its DJI FPV predecessor. The max flight speed is subject to dynamic local restrictions. Please abide by local laws and regulations when flying.

DJI FPV Goggles

Being on the right makes it conveniently placed for right-handed flyers, but less elegant for left-handed. Though this bias also means that right-handed flyers using the motion controller in their right hand can’t easily adjust the settings while flying. DJI Goggles 2 weigh only 290 g, which is 30% lighter than DJI FPV Goggles V2, making it easier to carry anywhere and more suitable for long-term use. The soft foam padding fits well with your face to greatly reduce light leakage. Often the size of the sensor is overkill for video capture, and only a small portion of it is used to achieve the maximum 4K resolution. What DJI did with the Avata is use some of that extra additional capture to add a new feature, HorizonSteady. The DJI Motion Controller supports Nintendo Wii-like movements for flight control (Credit: Jim Fisher) While we can’t confirm this currently, we’ve been told that the blade guard and main frame of the drone will be purchasable as replacements from DJI, allowing owners to replace them if they have an unfortunate accident.

Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second. Find out the difference between the DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2: The Goggles 2 feature some key upgrades, including wireless streaming, diopter adjustment, new head control method, and a lighter, more comfortable design. The 155° FOV is only available when the aspect ratio is 4:3, and the video recording specification is 2.7K@50/60fps or 1080p@50fps/60fps; the aspect ratio is 16:9, and the video recording specification is 4K@50/60fps, 2.7K@50/60fps, or 1080p@50/60fps. This is a little clunky and the Motion Controller isn’t suitable for flying through a building or tight spaces. It’s fun in big open spaces where the Avata can achieve a distinct aircraft style of flying, but it’s awkward if you are in restricted airspace. After flying the Avata, I have some real questions about its safety—despite DJI's smart decision to make propeller guards part of the airframe itself. My concern is more about the speed and most likely use cases for the drone: Let's face it, you're getting this one to experience the thrill of low-altitude flight or to nab a Sam Raimi-style effects shot for your indie horror film, not for real estate photography or aerial landscape footage.DJI Avata only supports downward obstacle sensing when used with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, or DJI Motion Controller in N Mode or S Mode. The below table provides a side-by-side comparison of some of the key specs of the DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 to further illustrate the differences between the two.

DJI Goggles 2 do not support astigmatism correction. If you have specific vision requirements, please consult your doctor before use. The through-the-camera view shows a sharp, smooth perspective, with low enough lag to make high-speed flight possible. DJI doesn't specify a latency in milliseconds, but the 1080p/100fps feed feels real-time to me. For the most part, the video feed is clear and sharp, but I did note some garbling and resolution loss when the transmission signal weakened. If you opt for the kit with the older FPV Goggles V2, you're limited to 810p resolution. Does not come with a charger. You can use your own USB-C charger. It is recommended to use the DJI 65W Portable Charger (sold separately), DJI 65W Car Charger (sold separately), or other USB PD chargers.
