Description

Once we connect a battery on a channel we get immediately the readings on the HOTA D6 Pro screen: total battery voltage and single cell voltage (with a precision of 0.001V). Moreover rotating the scroll wheel we get also other parameters like power input voltage from the internal power supply, battery temperature, power per hour and number of charged batteries. Scrolling the wheel during a charging task we can get also informations about the internal resistance of each cell in milliOhm. The biggest difference is the built-in AC power supply. Hota doubled the AC power from 200W in the D6 Pro to 400W in the S6, while DC performance remains the same at 650W. This makes it a more capable charger for home use.

This mode is the safest way to charge your LiPo batteries, and you’ll likely spend most of your charging time using it. You’ll need to plug in both the main connector and balance connector so the charger can read the voltages of all the cells. The charger will automatically balance the cells during the charge cycle to prevent issues. Fast Charge The fact that balancing is very precise and that the charger has indeed all the functionalities one can possibly desire makes the HOTA D6 Pro one of the best battery charger out there at the moment.Featuring dual output channels, it functions like two independent chargers, enabling you to charge different voltage or battery types simultaneously. The built-in AC power supply eliminates the need for an external power supply initially. However, the 100W per channel limit may require a more powerful external power supply (650W or higher) through the DC input to fully utilize its potential. If you already own the D6 Pro, I don’t think the improvements in the S6 is enough to justify an upgrade. But if you are new to Hota chargers, the choice comes down to what kind of battery you are charging and how you are powering the charger. The ToolkitRC P200 PSU (review) is also worth considering. It’s a versatile 200W power supply you can use for various tasks. It features adjustable voltage output and current limit, is compact in size, and has a USB-C output for charging mobile devices and cameras.

During charging, you can see the progress in percentage, the total voltage, the charging current, how long it’s been charging and other many other useful information displayed on the screen. A LiPo charger is a long-term investment in the RC hobby, as it will likely last for years, much like your radio transmitter and FPV goggles. Therefore, it’s wise to allocate a reasonable budget for a quality charger instead of opting for the cheapest option. Das Pro-Modell verfügt über alle Funktionen des D6 mit einem zusätzlichen AC-Eingang! Dieses Ladegerät macht alles, ohne die Dinge zu komplizieren. This is the HOTA D6+ dual channel charger. I was about to buy the popular Hobbymate D6 Duo Pro (also HOTA D6 Duo Pro) until I discovered that the D6 Plus had been released just a few months ago.

Then by adding a parallel charging board to channel 1, you can now charge 2 x 4s lipo’s and channel 2, may also be charging 2 x 3s lipo’s, if you decided to use a charging board. Minimum input voltage -> limits the voltage reached by an externally connected LiPo for charging other batteries The Hota S6 is a great charger, it does everything you need if you fly FPV drones, but for some people the older and cheaper D6 Pro might be enough. Take a look at the specs comparison here. When I am using the iMars Dual LiPo charger, I don’t really feel much a difference from the D6 Pro or the M6DAC, the interface and operation are very familiar. But the buttons are slightly more cumbersome to use than the scroll wheel, so I prefer the D6 Pro and M6DAC in terms of user friendliness. To calibrate the M6DAC, simply turn off the charger, hold down the roller button while powering up. To scale down the voltage, increase the scale value.

For those flying tiny whoops or other micro drones powered by 1S batteries, consider acquiring a charger specifically designed for these smaller batteries. Explore my recommendations for Tiny Whoop chargers here: https://oscarliang.com/best-tiny-whoop/#Best-Tiny-Whoop-Chargers Understanding Charging Current Requirements The Hota S6 is a bigger charger in all 3 dimensions than the D6 Pro (116×116x85mm vs. 108×105 ×76mm). Weight is also much heavier (800g vs 555g). For charging at home, I think size and weight are not a huge concern, but if you often take the charger to the field then the D6 Pro is a more portable option.

If you plan to power your LiPo charger from DC, i.e. using an external power supply or from a battery, then it doesn’t matter which charger you get, both will offer the same performance. But for the S6, you need to use a powerful enough PSU to get the most out of it and justify spending the extra money, as AC can already do 400W, e.g. using this 1200W PSU: https://oscarliang.com/product-lq1c. The first task is really interesting since is means we can use HOTA D6 Pro as a power supply and this is not something we see commonly on a battery charger. The HOTA D6 Pro Dual 650W AC/DC charger had been the go-to charger for many in the past thanks to its excellent balance between value and performance. While it’s been proven to be a reliable charger, it’s falling behind other newer options in terms of features. But if you just want a charger that works, it’s still a strong contender.

During charging, you can view the cell voltages, IR (internal resistance) of each cell, and power info. Each port is protected by a 15A fuse, which helps prevent sudden current surges between batteries, safeguarding your batteries during charging and shielding the charging board from damage. In my opinion, this feature is essential in parallel charging boards. While fuse blowouts are rare, you will need to replace them when they do. These fuses are automotive types commonly found in cars, and you can easily find affordable replacements online (make sure to get the ones with long legs): Fan noise is quite similar across the three chargers. The fan only turns on when it reaches around 60 degrees Celsius, the rest of the times it’s very silent. Both chargers have built-in PSU and can take AC, but the output power are both limited to 200W. Still that’s plenty for ordinary pilots. However, you must use the small button on the side to specify the correct number of cells; setting an incorrect number can result in over-discharging or under-discharging your battery. Additionally, it doesn’t balance the voltage of the cells during discharging since it’s only using the XT30/XT60 and not the balance lead, which is not ideal. Lastly, the discharge process is quite slow, which is why I never used this feature on the Thor 4 Pro. If I need to discharge a battery, I prefer to just fly it on a drone, or use the charger to do so. Conclusion For example you could use channel 1 to charge a 2s lipo and at the time charge a 6S lipo on channel two. Maximum capacity -> it is the value corresponding to the maximum capacity of the battery, so the charger will stop if this value is reached By having two output ports, you can charge two completely different batteries at the same time which speeds things up.
