Description

The introduction of steam tugs on the Tyne, from 1815 onwards was to be of immense value to the sailing ship owners.

In 1655, Ralph Gardiner of Chirton accused the Corporation of "tyranny and oppression" after he was imprisoned for contravening the monopoly of the Bakers and Brewers Company of Newcastle by brewing in North Shields, and unsuccessfully petitioned Parliament to abolish the regulations forcing traders to deal through Newcastle. An iconic fixture in Newcastle’s world famous nightlife, this ever-popular bar is a must on any Tyneside night out, whether you’re just starting off, half way through or winding down your alcofrolics. To ease this situation Parliament encouraged the export of coal from Blyth and from Wearside, but not enough coal was available from those sources to replace that shipped from Newcastle. In 1774 it was said that the Tyne Conservancy Board had allowed the river to be, from ignorance , inattention and avarice, converted into a cursed horsepond. Escape the unerring gaze of your other-half and find your way into the reclusive surrounds of the All Seeing Eye, Newcastle’s 21st century equivalent of a 1920’s speakeasy.

The sale of Port Botany and Port Kembla in May 2013 was led by former NSW premier Mike Baird, who was treasurer at the time of the transaction. Guarding your hidden passions with a mask of vague 90’s European football knowledge that you’ll never, ever need.

Some freemen therefore opened yards nearer to the mouth of the river, not at Shields but at Howdon instead. For example, a prolonged period of Easterly winds in the winter of 1847 penned over 1,700 sailing vessels in the river and on the day that the winds dropped, and the sea state improved, some 400 vessels left the river on the same tide. And because man cannot live on ale alone (unfortunately) they’ve also opened a delicious kitchen where you can stuff yourselves silly with man food including 8oz sirloin steaks and the house classic fish-finger sandwich. Before 1840 or thereabouts, the competition was from other sailing vessels coming from Kent, South Wales and even Scotland, but then came the railways.

A sight not often seen in pubs, the Left Luggage Room features no televisions as they relish and embody the established values of the pub; quality alcohol and even better conversation. There was no requirement for permanent buildings of any sort, or equipment such as cranes for lifting heavy weights. You can add any other station to it, or simply make the most of your day saver ticket and work your way back into Newcastle and continue your drinking adventure there. In 1267 the mayor of Newcastle, Nicholas Scott attacked North Shields with a band of merchants, setting fire to several buildings.
