Thirteen Lives got an exclusive play in movie theaters when it premiered on July 29, but now the easiest way to watch is going to be at home on Prime Video, as the movie is playing in only a handful of movie theaters at this point. Is Thirteen Lives coming to DVD? I've been reading through the comments on here, and I'm wondering if I watched the same movie as everyone else. I was honestly blown away by this film, and agree with every praise that the critics have given it.

Thirteen’ Is Twenty Years Old — But More Powerful Than Ever ‘Thirteen’ Is Twenty Years Old — But More Powerful Than Ever

Thirteen was shot on lower-cost super 16mm film over a period of 24 days. [6] The camera was small, had a Panavision lens and was mostly hand-held by cinematographer Elliot Davis, which helped achieve a documentary, " cinéma vérité" style. [4] [13] Principal photography took place on location [4] in Los Angeles, with Melrose Avenue, Hollywood Boulevard, and Venice Beach serving as filming locations. The Freeland home scenes were shot at a rented house in the San Fernando Valley. The outdoor school scenes were shot at Portola Middle School in Tarzana, California. Although she’d long been conscious of the impact Thirteen — which Reed co-wrote at just 13 years of age and ultimately starred in — had in the early aughts, the unexpected encounter still electrified her. I was just a kid, and so I grew up as the world was watching this film,” Reed says. “Maybe I would describe those experiences being more cathartic as opposed to the writing process. I was unaware when we were writing that there was anything being processed at the time.” I don’t even think she was alive when we made that movie,” the actress told Rolling Stone. “And here she is saying she’s written a screenplay because she was so inspired by me writing at such a young age.”

Holly Hunter, who is always superb, outdid herself in the role of Mel, the caring mother who doesn't know when to put a tighter grip on her daughter, Tracy. Her performance is so touching, and so painful that you want to get inside her and show her what she needs to do. a b Rochlin, Margy (August 10, 2003). "FILM; The Rookie and The 13-Year-Old". The New York Times. Archived from the original on November 14, 2012 . Retrieved April 24, 2018. Tracy is a normal thirteen-year-old girl, dressed in bright pastels, bedroom full of soft toys and with giggly thoughts of boys. Starting school in the new term she finds everyone in awe of Evie Zamora and her friends – all of who have suddenly turned into sexy young ladies over the summer. With her goofy kid look, Evie blanks Tracy until she impresses her by stealing a purse to go shopping. As Evie gets in with Tracy's mum Mel, she also takes Evie into her own world of rebellion involving stealing, drink, disobedience, drugs and sex. Mel struggles to hold on to the small parts of her daughter that she still recognises. Thirteen's superb actors will make you feel like the story actually happened. There is so much passion, so much realistic drama, you will relive your teenage years.

Stepp, Laura Sessions (August 24, 2003). " 'Thirteen': Parental Guidance Rejected". The Washington Post . Retrieved April 23, 2018. I don't know if the author was like this at age 13, but I do know she nailed the reality of life for some 13 year olds. She nailed the helplessness of the parent. Thirteen opens with an almighty wallop (literally) as two stoned teenage girls repeatedly punch each other in the face - just for laughs. And the hits just keep on coming in this harrowing, and sometimes heartbreaking, growing pains yarn.Mitchell, Elvis (August 20, 2003). "FILM REVIEW; Trading Barbie for Drugs, Sex and Halter Tops". This film evokes a veritable plethora of negative emotion; I hated almost everything that occurred, but I didn't hate the film. This film explores the anguish caused by the immaturity of adolescence: the competition, the bullying, the need for conformity. Its characters are like those found in Larry Clark films, however 'Thirteen' has none of the sleazy, gratuitous perversion that Clark relishes. This film explores all the vices, it depicts the worst of impressionable adolescence, but the camera never lingers luridly.

It's hard to believe that Nikki Reed had no experience before this film. She absolutely nailed the manipulative attitude of Evie, while also making the viewer like her. Filmmaker Magazine . Retrieved June 2, 2022. Evie introduces Tracy to her world of sex, drugs, and crime, much to Tracy's delight. Evie tells Melanie that Brooke, her adult cousin and guardian, is out of town for two weeks, and Melanie agrees to let her stay at her home with Tracy. While staying there, Evie discovers that Tracy regularly cuts herself to cope with stress. Although Melanie sees a change in Tracy's behavior and worries about the extent of Evie's influence, she cannot find a way to intervene. Melanie attempts to send Evie home, but reluctantly lets her stay after Evie claims her guardian's boyfriend is physically abusive. As Tracy and Evie become closer, Tracy increasingly shuts Melanie out of her life. I don't want to miss the point of this film. I know the point of it is the pressures on today's adolescents, and their reactions to some of those pressures, and the effects on families in those circumstances. And if you're going to illustrate those points then you have to show cause and effect, and that means unpleasantness, and shouting matches, and drugs, and manipulation, and under-age sex and so on. You have to have those things in the movie, I get it. Having grown up in her Culver City bubble, as she puts it, Reed recalls being in awe of Wood’s presence and her acting chops even at that age. All of the scenes in which Tracy cut herself were shot in a single day; Wood recalled running to her brother for emotional support between some takes. Wood later described the shooting of the two make out scenes with Javi and Luke as "awkward" because her family was watching behind the scenes. Wood's mother requested that in the scenes with Tracy's bra exposed, that the front of her not be seen on camera. The whole scene with Luke was rendered in a single, long and uncut take with Wood, Reed and Pardue, but was tightly choreographed with several crew members, social workers and parents also in the small room, carefully staying either hidden or behind the camera as it panned more than 200°, showing all four walls. [12] Reception [ edit ] Box office [ edit ] From writing the film to premiering at Sundance it was exactly one year, which is just unheard of and is a testament to Catherine’s energy and her passion coupled with people hearing that a 13-year-old girl was the co-writer of this film,” Reed says. The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a chilling look at a pair of contemporary Valley girls—13-year-olds who are way beyond their years but also are nearly beyond repair," [16] while the Chicago Tribune 's Michael Wilmington called it "an excellent, unforgettable film," but also deemed it "extremely disturbing."
